The Mother

ack looked out the window of the black town car as he passed the many palm trees lining the streets of Beverly Hills. Of course, he had many trees back in Virginia, but never any palm trees. It looked odd seeing all the exotic trees in straight lines along the road instead of being strewn around. He sighed as he addressed his driver, “Hey Levon, how much longer until we get home?” The Armenian man in the driver’s uniform looked at his watch and said, “Should be only ten minutes, Master Jack.” Jack cringed at that title; he knew it was just an old-fashioned way to address the male head of household, which he was by default. They drove down the streets until they got to a large estate surrounded by hedges and a tall iron fence. The town car approached the gate guard and opened, seeing the car, the gay opened and closed behind it. The mansion itself was impressive, an old Chateauesque-style mansion built in the early 1930’s by a film producer. It had everything a young family of multi-millionaires would need: an Olympic-sized swimming pool, tennis, and many other things.

Jack entered the front door of the giant mansion. He sighed as he entered the parlor of the mansion, and he was approached by a butler, who was quite a bit taller than Jack, and middle-aged with graying hair on the sides of his dark hair. He spoke in a refined British accent, “Master Jack, may I take your coat?” Jack replied, “Yeah, Richard, take it.” The man hunched over and took Jack’s school coat. “Have you seen Mom around?” Richard replied as he folded the coat, “The mistress is out by the swimming pool.” Jack nodded and made his way to their large outdoor swimming pool. Mary McCoy was a middle-aged woman with light brown, almost blonde hair; she was lying down on a lounge chair wearing a one-piece blue swimsuit and talking into a Bluetooth earpiece, speaking into it, “Yeah, Bill, that's okay, do that.” “Yes, I’m sure buy the stock, Rodenberry oil is sharing well below market price. Okay... Bill... yes, I will see you and Susan at Jack’s birthday party.” She then hung up and sighed. Mary then started going through her contacts. Mary had come up a long way in only a few months. Once a waitress and a single mother, now she was a founder and CEO of a Fortune 500 company as well as a majority stockholder.

Jack approached her, “Hey, Mom.” Marry smiled as she got up from the chair, hugged her son, and kissed his forehead. “Hey, Jackie!” "How was your first day at school?” Jack smiled, “Yeah, it was great, made some new friends.” She smiled widely and ran his hand through his hair. “I knew you would..... Have you met any girls?” Jack froze for a moment. “Well, just one, me and I are just friends.” Marry shrugged, “Well, you have plenty of time to get a girlfriend.” Jack sighed, “Yeah ... I sure do.” Jack didn't like lying to his mom, but he wasn't sure how his mom would respond if he told her the truth. He sighed, “Well, what’s for dinner?” Marry shrugged, “Whatever Martin is going to make, I guess.” Jack replied, “Well, I’m just going to go to my room to do my homework.” Mary smiled, “Good, homework is important.” Jack nodded and headed up the large spiral staircase to the second floor to his room. His room was huge, about half the size of the trailer he used to live in. The room was full of stuff, just so much stuff for him to enjoy. A giant king-sized waterbed, in front of a large flat screen TV with everything a young man could ask for. An Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and a cable package with all premium cable options. There were several bean bags around the room as well as a couch. On the side was a bunk bed for sleepovers, a large wooden desk for schoolwork, and a walk-in closet. Jack sighed as he took off his clip-on tie and lay down on his bed, kicking his shoes off and sighing. A few months ago, he was a nobody, just another poor hick. Now he was heir to an oil empire and lived in a mansion and had everything he wanted. He sighed and looked at a picture on the end table near the head of the bed; it was a picture of three people in front of a double-wide trailer: himself, his mom, and a bearded, balding man with glasses who was holding Jack on his shoulders. He had everything... almost everything.
