Chapter 2: The Uncomfortable Married Life 2
Qiu Ye felt like going up and scolding the old lady, what was she talking about being lazy, every day she had to take an hour's bus ride to get to work, not counting the time spent waiting for the bus, she had to leave home at around 6 am, at that time except for her mother-in-law who loved getting up early, everyone else was still asleep, what could she do, besides washing the bowl she had eaten from, did she have to wash the other bowls that hadn't been used yet?
There's even a saying that goes "not a single egg is laid", it doesn't matter if they've only been married for a few months and don't have kids yet, but what's weird is her mother-in-law's behavior, if they were able to have kids that would be the strange thing.
The old house was originally not soundproof, and when they made a little noise during their conjugal life, the old lady in that room would shout loudly: "All of you be quiet, tomorrow is still working day, what are you doing?" I said this must have been very embarrassing, after hearing these words there is still enthusiasm to continue.
What made Qiu Ye most indignant was that her mother-in-law actually said they were all eating and living off of her. She had been borrowing money to get by every month for the sake of this family, how could she still be so stingy?
Qiu Ye looked at her mother-in-law's garrulous nonsense and couldn't help but stand up from behind her, saying everything she thought in front of so many people.
Her mother-in-law was caught red-handed by her daughter-in-law speaking ill of her, and she felt extremely embarrassed, with a pale face. When she heard her daughter-in-law rebuke her in front of everyone without giving her any face, she became furious, fell to the ground, and started wailing. While crying, she said, "Look at this, it's not even like that, but my daughter-in-law doesn't take me seriously. Is there such a daughter-in-law who bullies her mother-in-law? I'm really unfortunate, spending so much money to marry off my son to such an uneducated and unreasonable wife, and she's even a university graduate! Ugh... how can I live like this? I won't live anymore."
The farce didn't end until Wang Wei came back and apologized and guaranteed to save the old lady's face.
Back home, Wang Wei's nose was no longer a nose and his face was no longer a face after Qiu Ye gave him a good scolding.
"You can't go a day without fighting, is it that you can't survive? My mom didn't say it to your face, can't you just pretend you didn't hear it? Besides, what my mom said wasn't wrong, you're the daughter-in-law and a high-level intellectual, but you still need grandma to make breakfast for you every day, don't you feel ashamed? And where did all your money go? Didn't you spend it all on buying good food for your nephew? Why didn't you say anything about buying some for my mom?"
Qiu Ye's whole body trembled with anger, pointing at Wang Wei, unable to speak for half a day.
She finally said two sentences: "I get up at 5 o'clock every morning, is that late? Do you think everyone is like your mother who sleeps during the day and gets up before 4 o'clock in the morning? Moreover, you sleep until 7 o'clock every day, why don't you say that getting up early to help your mother cook? Besides, didn't you know where my money went? Here, this is the account book I kept for this month, every single expense is clearly recorded. If you don't believe me, you can ask your mother if I haven't bought these things for our home." Qiu Ye threw the monthly account book onto the bed.
In the end, this matter was settled, but Qiu Ye's heart became more and more angry. Finally, she simply became a "iron rooster" and stopped buying vegetables every day. Whatever was available at home, she would eat it; if there wasn't any, then everyone could just go hungry together.
However, she still underestimated the old lady's means. Her mother-in-law was quite cunning. If Qiu Ye didn't buy things for the house, her face would turn sour. Every day when Qiu Ye had dinner at home, she would scold and complain, saying that they had to provide for them to live and eat, as if they wanted to suck their blood dry.
Wang Wei heard his mom say that, and he felt a bit embarrassed. At night when sleeping, he told Qiu Ye to hand over her salary card to his mom as well, since she was living at their home every day, it was only right that she should give some living expenses to his mom.
Qiu Ye almost died from anger after hearing that, and had never heard of a newlywed couple handing over their entire salary to the mother-in-law to manage, so they got into their third argument that night.
They had been married for only half a year, and they had already had three big fights over money. Qiu Ye began to re-examine her marriage because of this, but she didn't think it was worth getting a divorce over these things, and she couldn't bear the thought of losing face in front of that person, so she endured it. However, she wasn't foolish enough to listen to Wang Wei's words and hand over her salary card.
However, her mother-in-law had another trick up her sleeve. She would always call Qiu Ye before she came home and ask her to bring something back with her. Qiu Ye really felt that the cost of these daily phone calls was more than the cost of buying groceries. Later on, whenever Qiu Ye saw her mother-in-law's number, she simply rejected the call.
Her mother-in-law had an even more clever trick - she would directly dial 114 to find out Qiu Ye's work unit's phone number and then call there, asking for Qiu Ye to buy groceries on her way home. This made everyone in Qiu Ye's workplace aware of the situation, and they all knew about her capable mother-in-law.
Of course, people have different ways of thinking. Some colleagues sympathized with Qiu Ye's plight, but when faced with such a formidable mother-in-law who couldn't be reasoned with or scolded, they could only admit defeat. There were also some people who said unpleasant things, spreading rumors that Qiu Ye was not filial to her parents-in-law at home, which is why her mother-in-law had called the unit leader to tattle on her.
In short, during that period of time, Qiu Ye became notorious in her workplace.
And the old lady also called her son to complain, saying that Qiu Ye didn't even answer her phone calls now. She had served her mother-in-law with food and clothes, but hadn't gotten any good results yet. Her daughter-in-law wouldn't even answer her phone calls. Wang Wei was also infuriated by his mom's words, so he hung up on his mom and called Qiu Ye, scolding him severely over the phone.
Of course, the old lady's tricks didn't stop there. When she wanted to buy rice, flour and oil, she would wait until Qiu Ye was at home on weekends, then ask the grain store staff to deliver the goods. In front of everyone, she would say: "Qiu Ye, the worker has brought the rice, it's a total of 43 yuan, hurry up and pay him, he's still waiting." Qiu Ye didn't have her mother-in-law's thick skin, so in the end, she was the one who paid again.
Qiu Ye also went back to her mother's house and cried to her own mother, but Qiu's mother couldn't do anything about it either, she could only comfort her by saying "Just bear with it for a few more months, aren't you buying a new house next year? When that time comes, you'll be living separately, and things like this will happen less often."
Qiu Ye could only pin her hopes on moving away after buying a new house.
A year later, the land that my mother-in-law said was really bought by the company, saying that it will start building houses in the second half of the year.
Qiu Ye felt that the days were not so hard to get through after hearing this news, as if she had finally seen a glimmer of light. She was also less angry and resentful towards her mother-in-law's usual difficulties.
