Chapter 26: Who's Foolish
The dish was placed in a green ceramic bowl, garnished with scallions and served with a cold dish. The maid arranged the two small dishes and chopsticks on the table, then brought it to the front of Cheng Jiaoniang.
The lights in the house have been turned on and the bamboo curtain has been lowered to block out the flying insects that want to rush in.
Jiang Yao looked at the dining table in front of her, motionless.
I don't know if I can eat by myself...
The girl hesitated for a moment, looked at the maid beside her, and the maid gave her a wink.
The girl then reached out her hand to pick up the chopsticks.
Jiang Niang picked it up first, one hand stroking her sleeve and the other slowly lifting the noodles to eat.
The girl let out a sigh of relief and the servant woman made a slightly pleased expression.
There was a sound of footsteps outside the door, and four or five people walked in.
"Madam Guo has arrived." The maid and servant girl hurriedly welcomed her with smiles.
The woman in front smiled and pointed at the person behind her.
"This girl will be left here with you from now on," she said.
A young girl stepped out with a rough courtesy.
"How come there's another person?" the servant woman asked.
"Oh, I see that the little girl who came with you has left. The mistress was worried that you two couldn't take care of her, so she added another one." Madam Guo said, glancing at the hall.
Under the dim lamp, the woman was eating with her head down, without any intention of stopping to look up.
Being an idiot is also good, it saves trouble and worry.
Guo's daughter didn't want to stay any longer and turned around to leave.
The young girl and maid left here are still in shock.
"How did you leave?"
The new maid pouted and looked around, hearing a burst of laughter.
"Not going? Staying here to suffer for a lifetime?" she said, "Others have good places to go, and the young master himself comes to pick you up. If you don't go, that's just stupid."
The two women finally understood what was going on and felt a mix of emotions, somewhat melancholic and hard to describe.
"It's just like this." The girl turned her head and took a glance at Cheng Jiaoniang in the hall.
Under the lamplight, the woman was still eating slowly.
"After following for so long, it's better to knock on the door and say a few words." She muttered.
"Knocked on it, knocked several times outside the door." The new maid said, "Besides, what's there to say, a fool doesn't understand anything."
The young master of the Zhou family only stayed during the day and left, taking a maid with him. The news soon spread to the inner house as well.
"Aren't you reluctant to part with your daughter? She didn't even want to come to the kitchen to make some snacks, and now she's saying goodbye just like that, despite being tens of thousands of miles away. How can you bear it?" said Cheng Liu Niang with a hum.
"What's there to be reluctant about in this world? This girl is naturally clever, people tend to go for the better option, following that fool will only lead to a lifetime of foolishness, but following that young master will be a different story." said Cheng Wu Niang slowly.
Cheng Liu Niang already knew some things, and upon hearing this, she understood and swept a few strands of anger towards the maid beside her.
"If any of you dare to betray your master like this, no matter which master you follow, I will definitely go after and kill you." She raised her chin and said fiercely.
The girls were so frightened that they quickly knelt down and claimed that they did not dare.
"What is Si Chun?" asked Cheng Qiuniang curiously, "Why did Si Chun abandon her master?"
There is also an eight-year-old child here, and several sisters secretly fanned with a fan.
"It's boring, let's go play by the Lotus Pond." Chang Liu'niang said, changing the subject.
Sisters echoed and stood up, but Cheng Qiuniang was unwilling.
"There's a ghost!" she cried.
"No, Fourth Brother is ill. He studied too hard and worried too much. He got sick after catching a cold by the Lotus Pond. Even Dr. Liao said so!" Cheng Liu Niang scolded with raised eyebrows, stretching out her hand to poke Cheng Qi Niang's head, "If you fabricate things about my brother again, I won't play with you!"
Cheng Qiuniang felt both wronged and annoyed.
"I'm not playing with you!" she said, stamping her foot and walking away without putting on her shoes.
The wet nurse and the little girl were familiar with the scene, carrying wooden clogs and hurrying after them.
Cheng Liu's mother hummed.
"Let's go, that fool is no longer at the Lotus Pond, we can play with ease." she said.
At dawn, hearing a noise inside the house, Yatou hurriedly got up from her bed outside the bamboo curtain.
"Daughter, are you awake?" she asked.
Someone groaned inside the house.
The girl got up and tidied her hair before going in, where Jiang Yiniang was already sitting on the edge of the bed.
"Miss, I'll help you change your clothes." The maid said.
Although it's only been three or four days, she has become proficient in doing these things because they are really simple.
This wife is so easy-going and quiet, almost too easy to serve, oh, except when it comes to eating.
She combed her hair and washed her face, took a few sips of plain water, and the maid pushed the dinner table in front of Cheng Jiaoniang.
"Daughter, look..." she asked cautiously.
Jiang Yao's gaze swept across the dinner table for a moment in silence.
Nowadays, meals are all delivered from the kitchen on that side, but the small kitchen on this side has not been removed because...
"This fish is stir-fried with sesame oil, and this rice is cooked in a bubbly broth." said Cheng Jiaoniang.
The girl responded and put the food on the dining table back into the lunch box and took it out again.
The girl in the courtyard is washing her hair.
"Don't wash it anymore, scoop out the water, I want to use the stove fire to cook again for the young lady," said the maid.
The little girl washing her hair looked somewhat impatient.
"Isn't everything done yet? What else is there to do?" she said.
"She doesn't eat it, needs to be done like this and that again," said Ya Tou.
The little girl who was washing her hair came over with a flick of her hair and looked at the food box, pouting.
"What does a fool know? Just coax him and he'll be fine, serve him like a proper wife." She said, reaching out to take it, "Let me do it."
She picked up her chopsticks, flipped the fish over, and then poured some soup from the side into her rice, stirring it carelessly for a couple of times.
The strong smell of new hair oil wafts through the house.
Jiang Nang raised her head from the window and looked at this unfamiliar little girl.
"Daughter..." The girl cried out, suddenly becoming stunned, staring at the daughter sitting by the window.
This is her first time entering this house after she came in, and also the first time seeing this daughter-in-law clearly.
It's really beautiful, she was distracted for a moment.
What a pity he's an idiot.
"Daughter." She came back to her senses, knelt down and arranged the fish and rice from the food box, "As you said, it's been stir-fried and also steamed."
Jiang Yao looked at the bowls and plates on the table, then raised her head to look at that maid.
The originally carefree girl somehow became a bit tense under her gaze.
Fools always make people feel a little scared.
She forced a faint smile at Cheng Jiaoniang.
"Want me to feed the young lady?" she stuttered.
Jiang Yao looked at her and pursed her lips.
"I'm not stupid," she said. "You're the stupid one."
The girl lost her smile.
What an idiot...
Jiang Nang stretched out her hand and pushed the bowls and plates on the table over.
The soup splashed onto the floor, the table and even onto the body of the maid who was kneeling across from them.
"Oh no, I'm scalded to death!" The maid jumped up and cried out.
It wasn't long before Madame Cheng furrowed her brow in concern.
"The young lady said that the maid splashed hot food on her..." The servant knelt down in front of me and said in a low voice, "The maid said that the young lady herself knocked it over... Others were outside and didn't see it, madam, who should I believe?"
"What are you asking me?" said Madame Cheng, sitting up straight and looking at the servant girl. "Do I need to be asked this? Are we waiting for the people from the Zhou family to leave and never come back again? Is it difficult to serve them just because they eat and drink a lot? Who do you think is foolish? Me?"
His wife was so frightened that she hastily kowtowed.
"Yes, yes, madam, calm down, I know, I'll go and take care of it right away." She said, getting up quickly and leaving.
