139: Stories from the First War of the Lost

The entire floor consisted of a single long corridor that led into a large room, which then opened into another corridor on the opposite side.

They walked slowly along it, continuing to listen to Munkan.

"As you have surely heard before, Nyd first arrived on Ea in the year 2154—exactly 210 years ago.

However, the First War of the Lost did not begin until ten years later.

What happened between these two events?

  We don’t know.

We have learned nothing from the time before the First War.

We have a few theories, but I will get to those later.

What we do know is that the war began when an unknown military force used Nyd to try and seize control of Ea.

This plunged the world into chaos and despair.

It wasn’t until seven years later that the land of Eroden was founded—to provide refuge for those fleeing the war.

We also don’t know who this unknown force was fighting before Eroden was established.

  …

However, we do know that ten years after the founding of Eroden, the land of Nagasa was established—after its first ruler discovered his Nyd."

Throughout the corridor, paintings and drawings hung on the walls, depicting the few known events from the First War.

Among them was a painting of a mountain collapsing onto an army, and another of a massive whirlpool near a fishing village that swallowed entire warships.

Then, they entered the large room on the floor.

This space was dedicated entirely to one person.

"The Hero of the First War!

Unfortunately, we know almost nothing about him...

Only that he was once part of the military force that started the war.

Later, he betrayed them and single-handedly wiped them from the face of Ea.

Shortly afterward, he challenged the rulers of Nagasa and Eroden to battle.

That was in the year 2185.

He was killed by the two rulers, which ushered in a new era of peace—one where Nyd was to be seen as a part of life, not just a weapon.

That is why we have kept a piece of his Nyd here!"

Munkan pointed to the center of the room.

There, inside a glass case, lay a massive war club, with twelve slots carved into it.

  "This was his weapon.

It once held twelve Nyds, which granted him immense power.

But, unfortunately, these Nyds were stolen long ago.

During the last war, the King of the North tried to steal this very weapon—

  But he failed!"

"How is that possible?" one of them asked.

"Only the First Hero was able to wield this weapon.

Anyone else who tries is rejected.

It is impossible to lift unless you are him."

Shortly after, they continued into the final corridor.

More paintings lined the walls, depicting the First Hero in battle, and eventually, his defeat.

Then, they entered the final elevator.

This one led them to a last room.

Aside from a few scattered drawings, the room was nearly empty.

  Munkan turned to them.

"Finally, I will share with you a few theories we have developed—

about the time before Nyd ever existed!"
