Chapter 29: Adventurer’s Enigma

Hyro spent the rest of the day contemplating what it meant that he had the same class as the first Adventurer. Is it just a coincidence? Did the order have something to do with it? Why does it feel like I am always in the dark? Nail did not seem to care much about the fact that they had the same class as some guy from the past, ‘What does it matter? All that matters now is the power we have and what we do with it.’ Hyro could not argue with him, even if they knew why they had this class it would not change much at this point. Sure, Hyro’s starting advancement has been unparalleled, but he was still only level ten. Compared to the teachers or the adventurers who have completed school, Hyro was barely as strong as a fly. Hyro decided to adapt Nail’s attitude and look towards the future, trying not to worry about the why behind everything.

Hyro didn’t even realize he fell asleep until he found himself waking up from Nail complaining that he was hungry. The pair got up and went out to the cafeteria for some breakfast. As they walked through the halls they could both sense something was off, but they could not quite tell what. When they reached the cafeteria it became clear. Buck was at a podium towards the front of the cafeteria, and the seats were set up like an auditorium as opposed to the normal relaxed dining setup. A few wandering students milled about as Buck brought an item to his neck, making an announcement for everyone to report to the cafeteria immediately. It only took a few moments for every student and staff member on campus to make it to the room and find a seat. Hyro, Nail, Cynthia and Enris all found each other and sat in a group, all of the teachers sat up front and the rest of the staff were surprisingly here as well, they had their own table towards the back. After everyone settled down Buck explained why they were all here.

“Good morning everyone! I am sure many of you are wondering why you are here, not just in the cafeteria, but pulled from independent studies and brought back to campus. I have just been given clearance to explain some of the situation to you all, and some independent studies are allowed to resume in a few days, once all adventurers have been made aware of the situation. A few days ago, there was a bi-lair that opened up, half inside the dungeon of Ryse, the other half somewhere in the Sagitta Mountains. This in itself was worrisome due to the location being technically within the city of Ryse, but what caused so much distress is that the Lair was closed in less than a few hours from when it opened. Not only that, but that half that was in the mountains was closed by someone who is not an Adventurer, at least not one recognized by the High council.” As Buck continued speaking, Tracey wheeled out a board that had the picture of a man with human features on it. The man in the picture had hair the color of the sun and eyes the color of the sky. There were a few pictures of him, one showing his full body and he is a lean man, seemingly tall from the few notes written down as well, putting his height around 75 inches. At the top of the page was a name, Faysal Philips, Hyro did not quite recognize it, though it seemed familiar. Hyro looked over to see Enris, hand on his chest as he seemed to be stiff, gasping for Breath. “U-Uncle Fay?”

“This man is known as Faysal Phillips, he is an enemy of Ryse and is immediately wanted for questioning by the High Council.” Buck pointed to the image of Faysal as he spoke, “Starting tomorrow, independent studies are allowed to begin again, however, journey’s to Ryse and the Sagitta Mountains are off limits. Furthermore, if anyone comes into contact with Faysal they are to not engage and immediately notify the closest higher ranking adventurer. Further instructions will be given as needed to groups or individuals heading out, but that is all for now, you are dismissed.” The room remained quiet for a long while, something like this has never been heard of, how is there an adventurer that is not recognized by the High Council? Hyro was quiet for another reason, he was reading a notification that came after Buck explained about Faysal.

This was the shortest message he has gotten from the System or the Order, but it was one of the most direct, Faysal was tied to the Order just as he was and they apparently needed to work together. Of course things couldn’t be simple. Hyro thought to himself as he turned his attention to Enris, half of the cafeteria has left at this point, but Dreeva has joined Enris, Cynthia and Hyro, all of them looking to Enris. “So that is your Uncle Fay?” Hyro asked a stupid question but he needed to say something to break the silence. Enris nodded and quietly replied, “I wonder if mom knows.” Hyro knew that he had to tell his friend that there was more to the story, even if he did not know everything, but he did not want to risk any staff or other overhearing, so he opened up a new message, he decided to include Cynthia too.

  E: Agent of Chaos?

Cynthia: How did you do that? Woah! You have told me about the Order before but this is the first time I have seen a notification about them, I got a notification!

If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.

H: I just focused on the notification that I wanted to share and basically thought to share it in a message. I take it your notification was about the order? Can you share it or do you want to keep it private?

  Cynthia shared a notification:

H: If you want an idea of what changes it would make, the order has four main belief pillars: freedom, adaptability, flexibility and recklessness.

C: That is good to know, I never thought of aligning with a Deity or Pantheon, at least not until I have gained my class.

E: This Order of Chaos seems to be something we can not escape, Hyro is tied to it directly, I am tied to it though my Uncle if nothing else, and Cynthia now has the option to be tied to them too.

H: I also have to apparently find and work with your Uncle too.

E: You better not think you are doing that alone, WE have to find and work with Uncle Fay.

C: I better be included in the WE too.

H: It is probably going to be dangerous, I do not know what to expect if I even find him.

E: Well we better be ready for anything then. A good start would be traveling as a team so that we learn how to travel and fight with each other.

C: Ooh! My first independent study!

Nail: I can not wait to go on my first full quest either!

H: Fine, but if we are going to do this together we need to be cautious and we need to decide now, are we going with or against the Order. Most of my actions seem to be appeasing them but I was not really doing anything on purpose.

C: Their core beliefs do not seem that bad, and there is a spectrum of chaos. We can follow the chaotic path but still do good.

E: I have no direct ties to them, so it doesn’t affect me much at this point, however, if Uncle Fay is one of their Agents I am on board with following them for now.

H: So is that it then? At least for now we are going with the Orders wishes?

  N: Let Chaos Reign!

  The Group Message has ended.

Suddenly, for the briefest of moments, Cynthia started to glow, red crimson, after the glow faded her eyes took on a new color, that of a the same crimson. Hyro, Cynthia and Enris all wordlessly nodded to one another and went on their own way to prepare for leaving the next day. There was going to be a lot to do in one day, they couldn’t just leave to wander around, they had to be on some sort of quest or mission, either System generated or one given by cities or villages. Hyro had a few ideas, but also had a lot on his mind. I still need to figure out what happened to Mom and Dad, I still need to learn more about the Order, I need to apparently find Faysal and help him. On top of that Enris is putting on a strong exterior but I know he just lost his dad, should we even be going out now? How much of a difference can we make, we are just three students, not even all that powerful ones at that… ‘Hey! None of that!’ Nail yelled inside of Hyro’s head, interrupting his negative thoughts. ‘I did not bond with someone who could not do anything, I bonded with a crazy guy who let a wild animal run up his arm and fought off an attacking Hogtork! Someone who closed a Lair before even reaching level ten! We are strong and we will make a difference.’ Hyro stopped in his tracks as they were walking and looked down to Nail, “Thanks bud, I needed that.” Nail snorted, ‘Now, lets find us a quest near your home, we can not do anything to get close to Faysal for now, but we can focus on one problem at a time.’

Hyro knew that Nail was right, no independent study in the direction of Ryse would be accepted, but one near his home should be. It helped that it was Cynthia’s home city too, they would already know the area and possibly have some contacts to receive a quest or help research one. Right by Tracey’s office was a quest board, Hyro decided to check that out to see what was available there. There was a decent crowed of people around the board, some grabbing a paper off of it here and there and walking away, some walking away without finding anything useful for them. Hyro looked over, saw many different requests, many leading Northwest to cities above the Ira Forest. They would not work for what they needed, Hyro kept looking for something further south near Aquarine, but there was nothing. The door to Tracey’s office opened as Hyro was looking and Calepe walked out, just walked directly to the doors outside, red faced and saying nothing. Tracey walked to the door and closed it behind him, almost slamming the door. That was weird, Hyro thought to Nail, ‘Yeah, especially since they were talking about you behind that door.’

What do you mean about me? Hyro thought back to Nail who gave the best shrugging motion that a pine marten could give, ‘I heard your name, I could not hear much more besides a few words, No time, Powerless, Unfair.’ Why me? Hyro decided to try and get answers, he has never really spoke to Tracey, but Calepe he has, so he decided to go out and see if he could find more information from him or around his office. Hyro walked directly outside to the shed that worked as Calepe’s office and workshop. The door was opened, but Hyro decided to knock from the outside and wait at the door. “Come in.” A rushed voice from inside said. Hyro walked in and it was a completely different room than when he was here before. The whole space was a mess, papers, books, dust and random items were everywhere. Calepe was digging through a pile when he looked up for a moment to see Hyro, “Oh, Mr. Selk, what can I do for you?” Calepe almost spit the words out. It reminded Hyro of the the way Calepe treated him in class, a stark contrast to the way he was when James and Hyro were in to see him.

“Umm, I saw you rush out of the other building and came to see if everything was okay. Traveling the Land class also starts soon and I had a question I wanted to ask.” Hyro quickly added the lie to add another reason for being here. Calepe walked over to the door, closing it, leaving Nail outside and Hyro and himself inside. As he did that Calepe quietly spoke, “What is wrong? Oh, now that you are here, nothing at all.”
