Chapter 22

Sean felt a chill run through him. This time, it was his turn. The old fear of heights, born from a hang-gliding accident years ago, rose inside him like a bck tide. Before them stretched a rope bridge, long and swaying over the void. A fragile structure, its pnks cracked and uneven, each step spaced just far enough to make your stomach drop. Thirty meters to the other side. Twenty meters above a raging river.

It wasn’t just a bridge, it was the line between courage and fear.

Sean went pale, his face drained of color.

  “I… I’m sorry. I can’t do this.”

Evelyn scanned the scene. Every step across that bridge would take more than bance, it would take ice-cold focus. Sean’s hands trembled; beads of sweat slid down his neck.

She gnced at the map, closed her eyes for a second, and then it clicked.

“The trials,” she said quietly. “They’re our fears. Brenda faced the water. Now it’s your turn, Sean, heights. And mine…”

Sean and Brenda looked at her, waiting for her to finish, but she didn’t. Her gaze had gone distant, lost somewhere deep inside her thoughts.

With the air thick from tension, the three of them huddled together, searching for the one pn that might get them across that bridge without sending them plunging into the wild river below.

They fastened the rope around their waists, tying themselves together. Evelyn took the middle position, ready to step in if anything went wrong.

Brenda led the way. Sean, frozen by fear, couldn’t have taken the lead if his life depended on it. The tension was so thick that even Evelyn had to fight the rising panic cwing at her chest. Images of the drop below fshed in her mind, feeding the anxiety she was trying to keep at bay.

Brenda moved forward with more confidence than she’d thought possible, tackling each section with fierce determination. Sean, on the other hand, kept freezing mid-step, trembling so hard the vibrations rattled the rope handrails.

Fear mixed with adrenaline gave Evelyn the strength to keep pushing him forward.

“Come on, Sean! Focus on your footing, then keep your eyes straight ahead!” she shouted over the hiss of the wind and the ominous creak of the pnks.

They were barely a third of the way across when the bridge began to sway harder, as if testing their resolve.

“Sean, what’s happening?” Evelyn asked, forcing her voice to stay calm even as her heart pounded in her chest.

He stood frozen, like a marble statue, pale, eyes locked on nothing, paralyzed by sheer terror.

  “I… I can’t do this…” he whispered, voice trembling.

“Yes, you can! We’ll be across in no time,” Evelyn shot back, though she knew her words tasted like false hope. She tried to shake him, but it was useless. She needed a new pn, and fast.

“Brenda, untie the rope and go ahead on your own!” she ordered, her tone sharp and steady.

“No way! I’m not leaving you!”

“Please, Brenda, this isn’t the time to argue. Listen, once you’re across, I can focus on helping Sean. I swear I won’t leave him behind.”

Realizing Evelyn wouldn’t back down, Sean dug deep, somehow finding a sliver of strength he thought long gone. His voice came out shaky, barely more than a breath. “Do what she says, honey… please.”

Brenda’s anxiety climbed with every step she took. Each creak of the bridge made their hearts lurch. When she finally reached solid ground, Evelyn felt a fleeting wave of relief—but one look at Sean was enough to make it vanish.

Oh God, he’s worse than before.

“Sean, hang in there! We can’t give up now! Look, your wife’s right there, safe on the other side!” Evelyn called out, trying to snap him out of it, but it was no use.

Then she raised her voice, sharp and commanding, like scolding a kid. “Enough! You can’t bail on the mission. If you won’t do it for Ley, then do it for Brenda. We can’t leave her alone out there!”

“For God’s sake, Sean! We have to reach her!” she shouted even louder, her voice cutting through the wind.

Her words finally hit something inside him, enough to make him lift his head.

“That’s it. Keep your eyes on me, don’t look anywhere else. I’ve got you, step by step.”

Sean nodded, a flicker of life returning to his pale face.

Brenda’s shouts carried across the wind, an echo of raw courage. Evelyn moved forward, gncing back with every step to make sure Sean was still behind her.

Then, just a breath away from solid ground, the pnk beneath her gave way.

The world dropped out from under her.

  She slipped.

The rope snapped taut, jerking hard. Sean held on, his whole body straining like a drawn bowstring.

Evelyn dangled in midair, legs kicking, fingers locked around a splintered board that groaned under her weight. Below her, the river churned and roared, calling to her with a cruel, hungry voice.

Everything depended on Sean. One move. Just one. Grab her, and she’d be safe. But terror locked him in pce: muscles rigid, breath short, feet wobbling on the cracked pnk.

Evelyn’s eyes found his. Fear and hope collided there, sharp as bdes trying to shatter the ice that held him frozen.

  “Sean…” she whispered. “Please…”

The wind howled in their ears, a cutting warning.

Sean moved, slowly. A trembling hand reached out, fingers hovering just inches from hers. Every breath made the bridge quiver. The board beneath them groaned, ready to give.

On the other side, Brenda csped her hands over her mouth, eyes wide with helpless horror.

Sean’s arm swayed. His fingers were close enough to touch her. Evelyn held her breath. Everything stopped. The wind. The world. Time itself.

  Then the wood gave way.

And the void swallowed her whole.

  No scream.

  Just the fall.

  ????? ?????????? ?????

I know, I know... don't kill me for this ending! What do you think happened to Evelyn?
