Chapter 11: Sugar! Sugar! Sugar!

Benjamin walked over to the barn. He looked very sad. Casper followed him and tried to nudge his pocket.

“It’s almost like Casper already knows what we need to do,” said Crissie. “On the count of three, everybody stamp your feet. You too Casper.”

Casper looked from Benjamin to Crissie and back again. It was as if the horse understood.

  “One... two... three...”

On the count of three, they all stamped their feet three times. Even Casper joined in.

Benjamin whirled around. He looked everywhere with wide eyes. Seeing nothing he turned back and continued his walk into the barn.

“I think he heard us,” said Crissie. She patted Casper’s neck, just like Benjamin would have if he’d been able to see Casper.

Casper gave a whinny and then he pawed at the ground twice.

  Benjamin paused and looked back.

  Crissie rubbed Casper’s forehead.

  Benjamin kept walking again.

“Where is he going?” asked Crissie. She turned to her sisters. “Let’s all shout ‘Casper’s a ghost’ at him really loud. One... two... three...”

“Casper’s a ghost!” the girls shouted.

But Benjamin didn’t turn. He was leaning over a bucket.

  “What’s he doing?” asked Carla.

  “I don’t know,” said Cassie.

But Casper knew. Casper nudged Benjamin’s pocket again.

Benjamin looked down at his pocket, then he turned to face the spot where Casper stood. He held out his closed fist.

  Casper sniffed it.

“What’s in his hand?” asked Crissie.

Benjamin opened his hand. There on his palm rested a single sugar cube.

  “Sugar! Sugar! Sugar!” cried Callie.

Casper nuzzled Benjamin’s hand. As they all watched, Casper ate the sugar cube.

Benjamin looked down at his empty hand with wide eyes. Then his face split into a huge grin.

“It’s you! It’s really you,” said Benjamin. He was crying again, but this time he was crying because he was happy.
