Chapter 9 - Money sinks

Zoe reread her message to Ivan.

“Hay, I am doing fine. Just got back from class. I managed to clear the 10th trial. So I could use a big favor, could you watch over me while I absorb the inscription potion?”

I wish I could just ask a teacher, but they may be able to realize what I am, even if the odds are low. I don’t want to take that risk. I have been pushing my luck way too much lately.

Zoe sat on her bed for a moment, waiting and waiting. It was getting very boring, then it hit her how long it had been since she had gotten to read anything.

I mean, I have not had the time, and I am waiting so. Let's see what kind of novels this world has got!

It took her a bit to find a website after realizing that most of the ones from her world did not exist in this one. But once she looked over them and picked the first one that called to her.

SSS-EX Rank Reincarnation is unmatched in ruling. Sound basic enough that I should be able to start with it.

The story was well, it was. She had read worse and better, really it felt like a rehash of a story she had read in her past life. Just as she reached the twentieth chapter. She finally got a message back from Ivan.

“Hey, sorry, I was doing some training with Nate. Anyway, I could watch over you, but where are you going to do it, I mean, I can’t come into the girls’ dorm?”

“Ah,” Zoe let out a soft gasp as she realized her mistake. “That is a problem. Maybe I could just take it on my own? No, I need to be safe about this.” She thought outloud.

This would not be a problem if I made some friends who were girls. Zoe shook her head. Ivan was just luck.

She had almost no interactions with her female classmates so far. It could not have helped that she basically ran out of the changing rooms every time she had to use them.

Come on, there must be a way to minimize the risk. She sat complacently, still thinking until she remembered. Wait, this is a Hunter academy, so it must have private training rooms!

Zoe went to look up information about it when the screen on her phone changed, and her ringtone began to play.

A call? Oh, it must be the school. Zoe assured the call and raised the phone to her ear.

“Hello, is this Zoe Rose?” A Feminine voice asked from the other end of the line.

  “Yes, who is this?”

“I’m Jenny Mills, I’m calling about your Classes. Given you managed to get an, A on the exam, you will be offered a starter 3 months of the basic classes for free, alongside one advanced paid course for free as well. Please submit your choice of paid class by next week. As soon as you come down to the office, we can have you sign the paperwork for the transfer of the 300,000 credits and Paid class.”

“Ah, thank you for letting me know. Ah, I wanted to ask, does the school provide private training rooms?”

“Hm ah yes, for a small fee of 5,000 credits every hour, the training rooms are located in the east wing. If there is nothing else, I will see you at the office soon.”

“Ah, no nothing.” Zoe wanted only a moment before hanging up.

Her bed gave way under her as she fell back, her heart pounding. Why did that remind me of when I had to call out of work? She thought to herself before she forced herself to get up.

She gathered herself and sent a quick message to Ivan.

“I think I have it figured out. Will message when sure,” she gave it a quick once overlooking for any mistakes, then sent it as she stepped out of her room into the hallway.

This tale has been unlawfully lifted without the author's consent. Report any appearances on Amazon.

She took the elevator down and reached the door from the girls' dorm to the main campus. Quickly, she glanced around, part of her still worried that Theo was waiting for her to come out.

  Looks like it's safe.

Zoe stepped out, heading out towered the main office. Getting to the main office did not take long.

The main office was rather sparse, with little more than a large desk with a door behind it and a few chairs on which sat a girl with black hair reading a book. Seeing the small bell on the counter, she could not help but walk over and ring it.

After a short moment, a girl came out of the back room, her hair was pulled up. Zoe noticed the woman had large bags under her eyes as if she had not slept in weeks. “Hello, how can I help you?” The woman had a polite smile despite looking as if she could pass out any moment.

Recognizing the voice Zoe spoke, “I’m the one you just talked to over the phone. I’m here to fill out the paperwork.”

“Ah, just a moment.” The woman whose name pin read Kim quickly returned to the backroom.

While she waited, Zoe looked around. The place was strangely empty while the halls had been filled. Zoe had expected that more people would have been called in already.

At that moment, as if reading her mind, the black-haired girl spoke up. “They are only calling in those that passed with the highest marks first. I can’t read your mind, you just don’t have a poker face.” A moment passed then the girl added. “Like at all.”

Zoe could not help but reach up to her face, Is it really that bad?

“I see, well thank you for telling me.” Zoe quickly moved her hand down again.

“Oh sure.” The girl seemed almost surprised at her words.

As the awkward silence began to fill the room Zoe could not stand, so she spoke up. “So I’m Zoe, how about you?”

“...Nataly.” The girl said, looking up for a moment. Before Zoe could find anything else to bring up, Kim had returned.

“Ok here you are fill it all out, then just sign your name.” Kim handed over a clipboard with the forms on it.

“Do you need any help picking out your free paid class?” Kim asked.

“Maybe I’m not sure yet.” Zoe shrugged as she took the clipboard.

“Ok, just asked if you need anything.” Kim gave one more polite smile.

Zoe took a seat and began to look over the options. There was a lot, but she was able to narrow it down to a few rather quickly. The first was enchanting it caught her eye as it would give her an easy excuse as to why she would buy blood often, which could become a problem over time.

The next was alchemy, which also seemed to fit the goal of giving her a reason to get blood, after all, there is no way monster blood is not used in it. Plus potions were sure to go for a lot, given that anything that could heal wounds would be useful.

The last was different from the other two, beast taming. Unlike the others, this would not give her a reason to be buying blood often, but would give her as much blood as she liked so long as she gives her pet time to rest, and she would get a teammate she could trust. Furthermore, what kind of vampire did not have their own pet monster!

Ok, that last reason is a bit out there, but still. Zoe thought, leaning back for a moment.

“Humm, those are some costly classes you're looking at.” Nataly said, leaning over. “And well, you don’t strike me as the type that would have all that money.”

Zoe felt a sharp pain in her soul as she was attacked by words once more. “Are they really that costly?” Zoe asked.

“Beast taming not really, but both alchemy and enchanting get very costly very fast. So, unless you want to go into debt to beagle to afford the materials for the classes, I would stay away from them. The only downside for Beast taming is the space a large beast can take up, but just pick a smaller one, and the dorms let beasts stay in them, given that they're more like summons when it comes to clean up unless they're at a high stage. Personally, I think a cat type would be best for you, give your vibe, ah no, maybe a dog type?”

Zoe expected the girl to spot her, but she just kept going for a good few minutes before she covered her mouth and stopped herself. “Sorry, I went a bit overboard I just really like them.” The girl seemed embarrassed as she looked away.

“No, no it is fine thank you for your help.” Zoe said as she marked beast taming. I really don’t have the money to spend on alchemy or enchanting and what I’m getting for my high rank won't last long.

Zoe quickly began sighing the papers, having to stop herself from writing her own main by mistake. After looking over it to make sure she did not make a mistake, she got up and walked over to the counter and rang the bell again. This time it only took Kim a moment to come back from the back rooms.

  “All done?”

“I think so,” Zoe said, handing it over to Kim.

Kim flipped through the paperwork. After a moment, she smiled, “Yep, everything looks good. The credits should reach your account by midnight tonight, after paying back what you owe on the spear, plus what you owe for dorm accommodations and what you owe for enrolling, you will get 80,000 credits.”

Yep, I made the right move avoiding those money sinks. Zoe thought.

“Is there any way I could get the money sooner?” Zoe asked, rubbing the back of her neck. Kim shook her head.

  “No, sadly not.”

“Are you sure?” Zoe asked one more time, knowing it was hopeless.

“Yes, sadly I am,” Kim said firmly.

Zoe let out a defeated sound and left the room. As she stepped into the hallway she opened her banking app. Unexpectedly, she found 50,000 more credits sitting in her account than she expected.

Ah, the old man must have sent more money. Zoe quickly opened her messaging app.

“Dad, why did you send me more You don’t need to strain yourself!” She sent the message with a sigh, I’m not even his daughter, he really should not be doing this for me. But I can’t send it back, so I may as well use it.

Zoe changed direction, heading for the training rooms and shot Ivan a message.

“Meet me at the training rooms there in the east wing.”

Only a moment later, the message came back, “Ok will do, see you soon!”

The training room doors were lined up in a long row, and there seemed to be a number of floors of them. Each door was an almost pure white, standing out next to the rustic walls of the school.

Only a few minutes after Zoe had arrived, Ivan had arrived. He had a dopey smile as he walked over with a wave, “Man, how did I not know our school had a place like this?”

“Well, I don’t think anyone told us,” Zoe said as she looked for a room that was empty. After a moment, she found one and held her card up to it. And it let out a soft beep. At the same time, a notification beeped on her phone, charging her for one hour of use of the training rooms.

Zoe stepped inside the large blank room, Ivan falling behind her. The room was almost all white, save for the blue lines that ran along the walls.

“I mean ya, but I thought that at least Vince would have told us about these.” The name Vince sent a chill down her spine, she could not explain, but she pushed it to the back of her mind.

The door closed shut behind them.

Zoe approached the center of the room and sat down. She opened the system window and retrieved her reward from clearing the Tenth trial at the same time she collected her Random Skill.

Hmm, that might be useful? Zoe quickly put that thought to the back of her mind.

“Ivan, are you ready?” Zoe asked, looking at the potion, the contents were black as night with small star-like sparks flickering inside of it.

“Yep, are you sure you are ready?” Ivan asked. Sitting down by the door.

“As I will ever be.” Zoe popped the seal and held the potion up to her mouth, drinking the staring concoction down.

Humm tastes ok? Was her last thought before she passed out.
