Chapter 6. The Celebration

I woke up to Waizu standing in my room. “Huh? What are you doing here, old man?” Waizu laughed. “Do you not remember what day it is, you idiot?” “Huh? What are you on about, you big oaf?” Waizu pulled out a birthday hat and party streamers. “Happy Birthday!” he said excitedly. “Huh… oh yeah, it is my birthday… WAIT, DOES THAT MEAN—” Waizu cut me off. “Yep.” I beamed with excitement. Today was the day I could finally use my element: Light. You can’t begin to use your abilities until your 18th birthday, which was why I was so excited. “Follow me,” Waizu said. “Hey, so when do I get to learn how to use my element?” “Patience,” he said. “Why you little—” I was cut off as he brought me into the living room, where Rin was sitting on the couch. “Good morning, Yuto,” she said cheerfully. “Rin?” I asked, confused. “I thought you were away on a trip with your parents.” “We got back early due to the weather,” she explained. “Nice.” A little while later, Waizu interrupted our conversation. “Oh yeah, kid. Take this.” He handed me a present.“What’s this?” “Open it and you’ll find out.” I opened the present and found a grimoire inside. “A grimoire?” “Yep. It's so you can learn all your spells.” “AWESOME!” Waizu’s expression turned curious. “Hey, Yuto, what’s that new ring you've got there? Did you marry someone already?” he asked in a teasing tone. “Huh? Oh, it's nothing.” “Are you sure? It looks very familiar… but I don’t know. I am old. I may just be, how the kiddos say, tweaking.” Waizu looked closer at the ring, and his face went dark. “Yo, are you good?” I asked. He looked up at me normally again. “Oh yeah. Anyway, happy birthday, Yuto.” Rin chimed in after him. “Yeah, Yuto, happy birthday! I’m almost 18 as well, so I’ll also be able to use elements soon.” “Huh? Oh, I forgot you were here.” She sighed and hit me. “Just kidding!” “Anyway, I’m gonna go to bed. I’m tired. See you guys.” They both looked at me confused, since it was only 7:00 AM. When I woke up, I realized I had slept the whole day. “Oh, man! I didn't mean to sleep the day away.” Suddenly, I was dragged back into the void. “Huh? This place again?” “Did I catch you at a bad time?” she asked, giggling. “Nah, I just slept in really late.” “I know you did, you dummy! I had enough mana to bring you here yesterday, but you passed out. I was even going to be nice and wish you a happy birthday. Hmph!” I laughed. “Sorry.” “You better be! Hmph.” “Mm-hmm. Says the clumsy girl.” “I’m not clumsy!” She slipped, falling into me and knocking me down too. “Ow… I told you that you were clumsy. But also, could you get off of me, please?”
