Mi

Around 2000, Every day I would see her and the cats, crowded around as the Japanese girl in the Kimono would feed them bread and pork. The cats loved the extra food, and the girl loved the cats. She would feed them all while saying the names she gave them as the cats continued to play around and nourish the food. She would murmur “The goal of every life is pleasure. Every move we make is for a greater one.” After she was done she would walk into the crypt and not be seen to anyone.

I watched from afar but never said anything; One day I found the cats crowding around a gravestone, the girl hadn’t shown up that day. When I saw the stone, I felt sad and lonely, like I’d known this person:

  We miss you

There was no last name on the headstone, but every day after that when I saw the girl she was smiling. On one of the days, I went up to her and asked her what her name was (We’d been chatting every once in a while) and she said to call her Mi.

Over the past 25 years, I’ve seen her in the garden, but she hasn’t aged. I asked about her and no one else can see her. But I enjoy talking to her so I’ll continue to.

Just wanted to get it off my chest.
