Chapter 26

This part of the city made him feel uncomfortable. After Ambrose and Reabeck had agreed that she would accompany him back to his camp so they could both talk to Gro-Lag about the sudden increase in the rune order, she had pointed him in the direction of a healer who she assured him would fix both his tooth and ribs. Seeing his surroundings as he walked towards the building, she had directed him towards he was sure they could. He was just not sure he would be able to afford it.

The buildings that past him as he walked remined him a lot of the Jeweled Soul. Many of them had intricate carvings either on their entrances or on the stone of the building itself. They each were painted with some of the most beautiful designed that he had ever seen. A bakers had colorful representations of their cakes all over walls and even on the windows, each covered with amazing looking fruits, some of which Ambrose had never seen before. A cobblers had carvings of hundreds of scenes of shoes being made each meticulously painted. Finally, he came to the healers. The building was not adjoined like most of the others he had past, instead standing alone at the end of the street. It was smaller than the rest, and built of a mix of large red bricks and a pale white wooden beams that outlined the walls and windows. Instead of any intricate pictures or carvings, a symbol was painted large above the door. Whilst there wasn't an official religion of Bramptonburg, back when it had been Tarusburg the faith of the old country had been the city's official faith, so many religious symbols still appeared on some of the buildings, such as the one he could see here. He had been taught about them from an old priest who would teach the orphans their letters for free as long as he could also teach them about his faith, which is why he could recognise the one above the door as that of the life aspect of the One.

He approached the entrance. As he did another person opened the door to exit, giving him a wary look as he did.

Maybe I should have gotten some new clothes first? He thought.

As he entered, the smell of incense hit him immediately, so strong that it made his eyes water slightly. The interior was softly lit by a small wispy ball of light that was floating somewhere between his head and the ceiling. The walls were draped in thick tapestries showing scenes he recognised from the stories told by the old priest, which caused the sound in the room to be dampened in a peculiar way. A woman was standing close to the back of the room, next to a small, fabric covered chair and a bed, with a stair case to her right which led to the second floor of the building. She had her back to him as she replaced one of the incense sticks that was slowly smoldering on a shelf.

"I will be with you in one moment." She said softly.

She removed a burnt down stick from the small pot it had been standing in and in its place put a fresh one. She then raised her hand to it, and after a second it puffed to life.

She let out a satisfied sigh and turn to face him. As soon as she saw him, he saw he face change for just a second before it quickly turned to a smile. "Welcome, how can I help you today?"

"Oh, a friend of mine sent me here to get healed." He said, awkwardly.

Here smile widened slightly, but not in a way felt was friendly. "Ok, well are rates are a gold per healing session." She said, a small ting of pity in her voice.

The cost actually made Ambrose feel sick, and it took him a couple of seconds before he actually remembered he could afford it. "Oh, ok that’s… fine." He pulled the bag of coins from his belt and picked out a gold coin, holding it out to the women.

This book's true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience.

She staired out his outstretched hand, he smiles faltering to concern. "Would you give me one moment." She quickly walked to the stairs. "Arvin can you come here, please?" She called up them.

After a few moments a young man made his way down. "I was asleep, what?" He said, annoyed.

The women kept he smile so still as she looked at him her face could have been a mask. "This gentleman would like to pay for a healing session, could you take his gold and put it away for safe keeping?"

Arvin looked at him for a moment, before rolling his eyes and walking over to him. He put out his hand and Ambrose place the coin into his palm, as he took it, he didn't take his eyes off of him, clearly to Ambrose reading his mind. He paused for a moment with the coin in his hand, before turning back to the women with a nodding shrug. She furrowed her brow at him, seemingly in disbelief before he passed her and claimed the stairs he had come from.

"Alright then." She said, after watching Arvin leave. "If you would please lay down."

Ambrose walked over and laid down onto the bed, it was by far the softest and most comfortable he had even used, causing him to let out an involuntary sigh as he melted into it.

"So, where do you require healing?"

"Well, my tooth has been hurting for quite a while now."

  She nodded. "Ok, anything else?"

"Well." He said, creasing his face. "There is this." He lifted his shirt to show the still dark bruise that was covering a large section of his torso.

"Oh heavens!" The women said as she saw it. "What happened?"

  "It's… a long story."

After a few moments of hesitation, the women swallowed and nodded. "Right, let's get started." She turned over an hour glass that was sitting on the floor and placed her hands over him. One over his chest and the over his face. A soft glow emitted from them and Ambrose felt the wash of healing magic start to flow through him. He was just starting to begin to feel some of the pain subside when the women suddenly stopped and pulled her hand back.

There was a moment of silence as she staired at him, a strange mix of confusion and concern on her face.

  "Is, is something wrong?"

"Do you have magic?" She asked slowly.

  Ambrose nodded. "A little."

The women nodded also. "Ah ok, yes, no, there is no problem." She then moved her hands back into position and continued.

He wasn't sure how long the session he had paid for was, but it went on long enough that he felt too awkward to lay there in silence. "So, are you a priest?"

The women gave a small smile. "No, I am only an acolyte, only men can be priests. I only now realize I didn't ask your name?"

  "Oh, It's Ambrose. What's yours?"

She lowered her hand and let out a tired sigh "It's Sarah and unfortunately our time is up. Would you like to stand and see how you feel?"

As he pushed himself up, he felt strange. It took until he had fully stood and moved his body a bit for him to realize why. He wasn't in pain, and it wasn't just his tooth or his ribs that he was noticing. There were pains that he had for so long that he had forgotten they were until he was now noticing their absence.

  "Wow. I feel amazing."

Sarah looked at him as he moved, a similar look of confusion on her face that he had seen earlier. "I am glad, though I have to admit I am not surprised."

"You’re just that good of a healer?" He said with a smirk.

She gave him a smile in return. "Yes, but also, healing you was… surprisingly easy."

  "Surprisingly?"

The was a pause as she seems to consider her answer. "Can you cast healing magic?"

  "A little, but not well."

She nodded. "Well, you may have noticed that when you do, you get a sense of the injuries that you are healing."

Ambrose was aware of what she meant. He didn't get it as much when he was healing himself, but when he had been healing others, he had noticed that he could feel some aspect of the injuries they had.

"I have been healing people for a number of years now and I have a good idea from what I can feel how long an injury will take to heal, from what I initially felt from you I thought they would take two or even three sessions to fully heal, but as I went you just… healed faster." Her brow furrowed and she paused, but Ambrose felt there was something else she wanted to say.

  "Is that bad?" He asked

"I can see why it would be." She replied slowly. "It's just, I felt something… else."

  "Something else?"

"You have… I felt magic in you, but not magic I am used to."

  "What kind of magic?"

She sat down on the chair that was next to the bed and let out a sigh. "I will be honest Ambrose. I have no idea."
