It was well into the dark hours of the night, but Zashan was still up. The sailors had been treating him well, but they kept him busy—no doubt about that. It was always “swab the deck” or “hoist the sails.” It drove him crazy; he was not used to being bossed around. He was used to his name being feared, to killing others and giving orders. But his power was very weak now because he was using all the strength, he had just to stay alive while steadily healing himself. At this rate, it might take him years to heal completely. Unfortunately, he would not be able to take over the ship until he found some sort of weapon, because even though he was a dangerous foe, he could not overpower an entire crew without one. Now, if he found a sword, a club, or even a dagger, he could. But he also realized that if he took over the ship, there would not be anyone left to run it. No, he would have to wait until they reached a harbor to make his first move.
Finally, he finished his work and went to the extra bedroom he had been given to live in for the time being. He lay down, began to close his eyes, and quickly fell asleep. But as soon as his eyes closed, they were flung back open and he found himself fighting a whole group from his old thief clan. He shot magic bolts of lightning. “What am I doing? I must stop!” his thoughts shouted at him, but he was still fighting. One of the people he was fighting was Noel—he never thought he would see her again; much less be fighting one of his allies. He tried to shout at her, but he was not in control of his actions. Noel shouted, “Surround her! Attack from all sides!” This threw Zashan for a loop. “Her?” he wondered, confused about what she was talking about. Suddenly, he shouted at Noel, “You will pay for the death of Devil’s Son! He was the only one I ever loved, and you will pay with your lives!” Suddenly, he realized what was happening—he was seeing it through the eyes of Angel’s Daughter. He, or rather she, pulled a dagger from its sheath, and Zashan recognized it immediately; it was his old dagger. He figured it must have found its way to her.
