Golden Light - 2

Everyone in the city stood in shock and confusion for they had no idea what was going on. Only those in the square understood that something major was happening when before anyone could react, an enormous figure descended from the portal, hovering over the city.

It had the wings of a dragon fly, the body of a spider, and black scales like that of a reptile. It stood 18 meters tall, with a head like that of a woman, blood red hair covering its vision.

The lips of the monstrosity curved upwards in a sinister smile as it opened its mouth wide, hundreds of monsters like itself pouring out from within as they dove towards the humans below.

Screams of horror and panic filled the city as people ran in all directions, tripping over one another to escape the monsters.

One such monster had latched itself onto a man and was about to bite down on his head. But that was the last of what the girl witnessed as the figure holding her shifted them to where the shelter was.

The figure gently let the girl down, her demeanor still preoccupied with a peace that surpassed all understanding.

"There's not much time left," the figure said. "Wake your brother up and gather any belongings you may have, I will guide you out of this city."

The girl understood the intentions of the figure and clenched her fists as she opened her tent door and rushed to her brothers’ side, violently shaking him.

"Reggie, Reggie! Wake up!" she said in a hurried tone.

Reggie could barely lift his eyes as the voice of his sister woke him from a deep slumber. Yawning, he saw the stern expression on his sisters’ face. "Big sis, what's the matter?"

Beautiful silver eyes met hers, a trait they both shared unlike her brother’s signature blue hair, inherited from their father.

”We must leave right now, there are monsters coming out of the sky killing everyone in the city.”

Reggie didn’t understand what she meant. “What are monsters?” he spoke weakly.

She took a deep breath and replied, “I can’t explain it to you, but we can’t stay here we must flee the city.”

Her brother tried getting up from his bed but fell right back down. “I can’t move. My body is still… bad. My head hurts and I’m... sleepy...” As his voice trailed off as his eyes closed once more but his sister shook him again.

“Reggie you have to stay awake! There’s a person outside who can h-”

Right before she could finish her sentence, several screams came from outside their tent. She rushed to see what was going on but the man who had brought her “home” stood right outside forbidding anything or anyone from coming near.

The story has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

“It’s alright.” The figure spoke calmly, “I dealt with the abominations.”

She looked past his beautiful clothing and saw bodies of the flying monsters were strewn across the ground, cleanly cut in half. Also, two women were crawling away from the remains, their faces stained with tears of terror.

  —-

They didn’t know what happened. In the blink of an eye, several of those monsters had grabbed both of them by the hair, torn their clothes, and were about to devour them alive when a silver light flashed around the two, and in the next moment the bodies of the monsters lay on the ground.

Shaken with fear they collapsed to the floor as both of the women began crawling away unable to hold back their tears as they cried out for someone to save them, not knowing that someone already did—at least temporarily.

  —-

”Do they not, see you…?” The girl asked in confusion for why they were crying out for a savior.

"My presence has been hidden from others for a certain time." The figure replied.

The girl, knowing this person was on her side, had thoughts that things were not as simple as they seemed and held some questions deep within her heart that she would ask when they had a chance, but one she must know before anything else…

  “What’s… your name?”

It was a bizarre question after what she just witnessed, especially with two women crawling away on all fours, but she wanted to know the name of her guardian that took the responsibility to protect them.

The figure chuckled, and crouching down to meet the girls’ eyes spoke in a firm voice.

“My name is Vertear.” Then, he stood straight up and gave a polite bow to show his respect.

The girl replied in like-manner, bowing as she also gave her name, “I am Cynthia.”

Her bow was a little clumsy, but Cynthia was grateful for knowing her guardians name.

Then, she looked over to where her brother lay.

“I can’t move him sir, he’s sick and I haven’t found any medicine.”

Vertear, understanding the situation, looked at the boy and saw his stomach rising and falling with every breath, his complexion pale.

“Do you have any water?” He spoke seriously.

Cynthia went back inside and rummaged through their little shelter and opened a wooden chest near her bedroll and took out a water-skin. She brought it to Vertear as he took it and kneeled to the ground.

“S-Sir! What are you doing?” Cynthia exclaimed.

Amidst her shock, Vertear closed his eyes and silently prayed earnestly over the water-skin as it glowed with a golden light, stunning Cynthia.

After a few seconds the golden light died down and he stood back up.

“Here, give this to your brother.” He passed the water-skin to Cynthia.

Her mouth opened and closed in amazement.

That was the most beautiful light I have ever seen, she thought.

Shaking herself out of the awe and not asking any questions, she quickly brought the water-skin over to her brother, shaking him once more as he had already fallen asleep.

“Reggie, Reggie! Wake up and drink!”

Reggie, opening his eyes once more saw the water-skin in her hands.

His mouth was dry and his lips were cracked as he took the water-skin and greedily drank every drop of water. The water wasn’t anything special, but the moment he drank it all, a golden light surrounded Reggie. The light streamed all around him like bright sparkles as his complexion immediately grew more colorful, his cracked lips receding, and the light in his eyes returning with a vigor his sister probably thought she would never see again.

Reggie felt a warmth like never before envelope his body as every part of him was filled with innumerable comforts and his fatigue and aches hastily fade away.

What remained was a healthy young boy—being squeezed to death by a joyful older sister, tears streaming down her face.
